Freeview Digital TV

Freeview is ideal for those who don’t wish to pay a monthly subscription for their digital TV. You can get basic channels as well as some HD channels for free, therefore it is the cheapest way to receive digital services. All you need to do is make one off payment at the start, for a set top box or an integrated TV if you prefer. You will still be able to watch the original terrestrial channels such as BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, but you will have access to new, extra ones as well like BBC3 and ITV2, plus some radio channels.

When the digital switchover takes place in 2012, everyone will have to receive digital television in order to watch anything at all. The least you will have to do will be to purchase a Freeview set top box, so there is no obligation to take up any expensive digital services.
Depending on the set top box you buy, you may even have the facility to send emails or do your online shopping via your TV set. These types of services are currently expanding, so you will be able to do more and more different things over the next few years. If you have a HD ready TV then by buying a Freeview HD set top box, it is currently the cheapest way to watch HD programmes.

You must live in a Freeview region in order to be able to receive it. You can check using an online postcode checker, so this is advised. About 80% of the UK’s households are eligible for Freeview. You will also need to have a Freeview set top box, and these cost from £20. They are just simply connected to your TV, and a digital recorder can be set up as well. You are able to record programmes on its internal memory and store them until you have time to watch them. You can even pause, and rewind live shows too.

The cost you pay completely depends on how you wish to receive Freeview. Standard boxes cost from around £20, whereas some HD ready TV can cost way over £1000 at the moment. The price of these are sure to drop over the next few years though as it becomes more and more mainstream. Subscription services will often have a monthly fee attached as you will be tied into a contract, but the hardware tends to come free as part of the deal.
